Founded in 1823 by French Government, taken over by Government of India (GOI) in 1956 and upgraded to a Postgraduate Institution in 1964, an Act of Parliament in 2008 declared Jawaharlal Institute of Postgraduate Medical Education and Research (JIPMER) as “An Institution of National Importance”.
Through the said Act, JIPMER is empowered as an Institution to grant Medical, Dental, Nursing degrees, Diplomas and other academic distinctions and titles which stand recognized by respective Statutory Bodies. The Degrees granted by the JIPMER are recognized medical qualifications for the purpose of the Indian Medical Council Act and not withstanding anything contained therein, are deemed to be included in the first schedule of that Act, entitling the holders to the same privileges as those attached to the equivalent awards from the recognized Universities of India.
JIPMER, one of the leading Medical Institutes of India is spread over 195 acres Campus in an urban locale of Puducherry (formerly Pondicherry), JIPMER is 170 Kms. by road from Chennai.
JIPMER, with 28 academic departments, imparts Undergraduate (UG), Postgraduate (PG) and Superspeciality Medical Training through a working hospital (JIPMER Hospital) with a bed strength of 1050 and a Nursing College. JIPMER Hospital provides free medical care accessible to poorer sections of society. PG Degree /Diploma Courses are offered in 20 disciplines with superspeciality departments of Cardiology, Neurology, Cardiothoracic Surgery, Neurosurgery, Urology and Plastic Surgery all under one roof. Full-time Ph.D. Programme is available in six disciplines.
JIPMER aims to provide high quality learning environment for those undertaking taught and research degrees awarded by JIPMER in the Faculty of Medicine. Teaching and Training for M.B.B.S. Degree at JIPMER is focused on health improvement, disease prevention and cure as well as fundamental understanding. All medical graduates must meet the core outcomes set by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
JIPMER ensures that teaching methods employed, facilities and content of the programme are in line with the latest innovations with a strong science base. JIPMER promotes teaching and training through small seminars, didactic lectures, wide range of clinical and laboratory experiences, independent thinking and relevant research
The Institute is an Institution of National Importance, its courses are recognized by Medical Council of India. It is administered and funded by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare of GOI. Admission to M.B.B.S. Course is through an Entrance Examination conducted by JIPMER at 6 centres once every year. In addition certain category of students are admitted through Government nominations
